The Science Behind Blue Light...

The colors humans can see sits a spectrum called "visible light" which ranges from red to blue/purple. Blue light sits on the very edge of the spectrum, close to the invisible UV light. Blue light is better known as "high-energy visible light” (HEV). This light has a much shorter wavelength than other colours and hits our eyes at a higher frequency. Resulting in excessive eye strain.

Now, the blue light that falls on the beneficial side of the spectrum comes from the sun. The sun’s blue light controls our circadian rhythm and memory. But, when we expose ourselves to excessive amounts of blue light produced by digital screens, we expose our eyes to something unnatural and not beneficial.

Blue Light FAQs

Blue light is often referred to as high energy visible light (HEV) and is the portion of the visible light spectrum with the shortest wavelengths (between 400 and 500 nanometers or nm) and has the highest energy. It does not appear blue to the naked eye however!

Our eyes are not very good at blocking blue light. Although our cornea and lens block UV rays from reaching the back of our eyes or what’s known as the retina, they are less effective at preventing blue light from doing so.

This is a concern as exposure to blue light can lead to digital eye strain and some think may increase risks of developing macular degeneration.

According to Dr. David Friess, OD, FAAO, of the Eyesafe Vision Health Advisory Board “There are also two primary domains of blue light highlighted. One kind of blue light damages cells of the retina, while other blue light affects our wake/sleep cycle."

This “good” blue light “appears to contribute to physical and emotional health,” he says.

We have traditionally always had exposure to blue light from ambient sunlight but now, that exposure is almost everywhere through internal lighting, LEDs, computer screens, tablets and smartphones. Our brains associate blue light with daylight. This means that now, when exposing our eyes to blue light during the evening as well through use of device technology, we are tricking the brain into thinking it’s still daytime which causes a decrease in the production of melatonin (sleep hormone) levels therefore making it more difficult to fall asleep at night and also to wake up in the morning.

Sleep deprivation, headaches, disorientation, blurry vision, eyestrain, dry eye, tired eyes, macular degeneration, and cataracts are all things that over exposure to blue light can potentially lead to.

All the increased exposure that our modern lives bring to blue light means that anyone benefits from wearing glasses with lenses that contain blue-light blocking material or blue-light blocking coatings.
