Blue light exposure has become a common part of our daily lives, with the average UK adult spending over 13 hours a day looking at screens1. Nearly all screens we use today emit a large amount of blue light, and although we may not realise it, this can have a big impact on our eyes and our vision.
Excessive blue light exposure can be the cause of a range of eye problems, leading to general eye discomfort. Overexposure to blue light is likely to result in excessive eye strain, sleep disruption, headaches and general fatigue, but can affect people in different ways - causing more or less discomfort from person to person.
Our specialist-designed UVBlue and UVBlue+ lenses filter out a large portion of the high-energy blue light portion of the spectrum.
Unlike many other blue light-blocking glasses, our lenses aren't just coated. Instead, UV420+ material is cast directly into the lens itself, meaning it can't be scratched off and degraded over time.
Add UVBlue digital protection lenses to any of our frames, and make your glasses screen safe!
Looking to protect your eyes but don't have a prescription? Our brand exclusive range of Bluebers glasses come in plano (no prescription) and reading strengths up to +3.50.
Blue light glasses, also known as blue light blocking glasses, are fitted with specialised lenses that block the high-energy, damaging wavelengths associated with blue light. Blue light lenses remain entirely transparent, just like regular glasses lenses.
Blue light blocking lenses are designed to absorb or block a substantial portion of the harmful blue light emitted by digital screens and electronic devices. These lenses help reduce blue light exposure, minimising its potential negative effects on eye health.
We have both non-prescription blue light glasses and prescription blue light glasses to choose from, featuring specially designed lenses that help alleviate the effects of prolonged blue light exposure.
Our UVBlue lenses utilise a special chemical cast into the actual lenses, without adding any cosmetic colour to the finished lens. Many other companies offer an inferior coating on the surface which blocks little of the harmful blue light and can also scratch off and degrade over time.
UVBlue+ lenses add a special blue hue anti-glare hard protective coating on the surface of the UVBlue lens material. This is ideal for people who spend a large portion of their day using devices.
UVBlue+ lenses have anti-smudge and dust-repelling qualities on the surface making them more resistant to dirt and easier to clean.
Our UVBlue+ lens adds a special blue hue anti-glare hard protective coating on top of the UVBlue lens material. This is ideal for people who spend a large part of their day or evening using devices. The option has anti-smudge and dust-repelling qualities on the surface making them less likely to get dirty and easier to clean.

The colours humans can see sit a spectrum called "visible light" which ranges from red to blue/purple. Blue light sits on the very edge of the spectrum, close to the invisible UV light. Blue light is better known as "high-energy visible light” (HEV). This light has a much shorter wavelength than other colours and hits our eyes at a higher frequency, which results in excessive eye strain.
Now, the blue light that falls on the beneficial side of the spectrum comes from the sun. The sun’s blue light controls our circadian rhythm and memory. But, when we expose ourselves to excessive amounts of blue light produced by digital screens, we expose our eyes to something unnatural and not beneficial.
Our UVBlue lens technology is used to make clear lenses that cut HEV light in the 400–420 nm part of the spectrum, in addition to blocking all UV wavelengths.
A large number of people work in front of a computer or laptop screen, sometimes causing excessive eye strain and fatigue. Blue light glasses offer a convenient solution to improve eye comfort.
Handheld devices now make up one of the largest portions of artificial blue light exposure, with adults typically spending over 3 hours a day using phones and tablets. They are also commonly used later in the day and into the night, where blue light can have the largest negative effect. Wearing blue light glasses can help shield your eyes from this exposure and keep them protected.
As you're relaxing in front of the TV, your eyes are still working hard. Blue light from your TV, although further away, can still cause damage to your eyes. If you watch TV before bed you'll want to slide your blue light-blocking glasses on to make sure your sleep isn't disrupted.

Blue light is often referred to as high energy visible light (HEV) and is the portion of the visible light spectrum with the shortest wavelengths (between 400 and 500 nanometers or nm) and has the highest energy. It does not appear blue to the naked eye however!
Our eyes are not very good at blocking blue light. Although our cornea and lens block UV rays from reaching the back of our eyes or what’s known as the retina, they are less effective at preventing blue light from doing so.
This is a concern as exposure to blue light can lead to digital eye strain and some think may increase the risks of developing macular degeneration.
According to Dr. David Friess, OD, FAAO, of the Eyesafe Vision Health Advisory Board “There are also two primary domains of blue light highlighted. One kind of blue light damages cells of the retina, while other blue light affects our wake/sleep cycle."
This “good” blue light “appears to contribute to physical and emotional health,” he says.
By wearing blue light glasses, individuals can significantly reduce eye strain, alleviate discomfort, and improve their sleep quality, making them an ideal choice for those who spend extended periods in front of digital screens, whether for work, gaming, or entertainment.
Sunglasses are used to block UV rays and reduce the brightness of other light sources. This means they also reduce the amount of blue light that enters the eyes. Whilst blue light sunglasses are not specifically available, normal sunglasses will provide the same effects.
We have traditionally always had exposure to blue light from ambient sunlight but now, that exposure is almost everywhere through internal lighting, LEDs, computer screens, tablets and smartphones. Our brains associate blue light with daylight. This means that now, when exposing our eyes to blue light during the evening as well through the use of device technology, we are tricking the brain into thinking it’s still daytime which causes a decrease in the production of melatonin (sleep hormone) levels therefore making it more difficult to fall asleep at night and also to wake up in the morning.
Sleep deprivation, headaches, disorientation, blurry vision, eyestrain, dry eye, tired eyes, macular degeneration, and cataracts are all things that over exposure to blue light can potentially lead to.
All the increased exposure that our modern lives bring to blue light means that anyone benefits from wearing glasses with lenses that contain blue-light blocking material or blue-light blocking coatings.
Results are less eye strain and a great way to counter the sleep problems that excessive screen time, gaming and device use brings.
It’s not just people who need prescription glasses who should consider blue light blocking lenses. This applies to us all, even those with 2020 vision.
Believe it or not, research shows the average time spent on devices and in front of screens is on average around 11 hours per day. This means our eyes are under quite considerable exposure to digital eye strain, so common sense would suggest it is good practice to wear blue-light blocking glasses when using modern technology. This is especially true during the evenings or when using devices at night, enabling your body to produce the right amount of sleep hormones to get that all important good night’s sleep.
Our UV Blue lenses utilise a special chemical cast into the actual lenses, across all lens packages, without adding any cosmetic colour to the finished lens.
‘Computer’ lenses have been around for some time now but many companies either offer just an inferior coating on the surface which blocks very little of the harmful HEV BLUE light … and can also scratch off and degrade over time. Others simply add a slight yellow tint into the lens which although can help block the Blue light, is not cosmetically pleasing.
With Our UV Blue lenses we have mastered the technology to create lovely crisp and clear lenses that allow true colours not to be distorted and you also look great to all your friends, family, and colleagues!
Because the chemical component is within ALL of the lens material it blocks a superior amount of the harmful range of Blue Light and selectively ‘relaxes’ things down as the spectrum hits the part where what is called ‘Blue Turquoise’ light is seen and this is beneficial to the eye. Another benefit is that even if the lenses get scratched, full function remains to protect you.
Our small add on adds a special BLUE HUE anti-glare hard protective coating on top of the UV Blue lens material that adds an extra amount of Blue Blocking property. This is ideal for people who spend a large part of their day or evening using devices …. The slight ‘Blue Hue’ that results is visible to others but has minimal effect on the colour perception of the wearer. It also has anti smudge and dust repelling qualities on the front surface making them less likely to get dirty and easier to clean to keep your vision crystal clear.
Yes and we recommend it to anyone who spends time on devices. You can still use non-prescription blue light glasses. Just select Ultra-Blue or Ultra-Blue+ lenses and choose PLANO when entering your prescription.
